What Do We Mean by Diversity in Fantasy?

Diversity in the world of 2025. Oh, hark, never did the word exclusionary of so fair a clothing.

Fantasy is the go-to genre for escape, to control one's destiny, and feel that heroic actions still matter. But as the genre evolves and the sensibilities of of the age shift, there seems to be certain grumbling to be heard. Not so quite whispers, in places like Reddit and Booktok, with people seeking epic tales set in new worlds, exploring different cultures, and penned by folks with different skin tones.

What really do we mean by diversity in fantasy novels?

For many, diversity is simply about including characters of different races, genders, and socioeconomic backgrounds. While representation matters, I believe that true diversity runs deeper. It’s about presenting diverse ideas, conflicting beliefs, and cultural frameworks that challenge and expand the reader’s worldview.
